Bounty From The Earth

September 13th, 2007

My garden has given me some real joys this season. The feel of the soil, smell of the compost seeing my food grow right from my own yard are priceless rewards. If you have never plucked a tomato from your own plant and eaten it right there in the garden, you are truly missing out on one of the greatest pleasures life can give you.

Just as rewarding as eating this spread of food is being able to photograph it. I don’t claim to be the next Edward Weston but I particularly love the form and color of peppers. Each one is slightly different from the next, with different curves and lines, colors and shapes. They can range from ordinary to very sensual and I am never bored by photographing them.

Check some out:

New Model: Amy

September 9th, 2007

Amy is a model in Arlington, VA and a delight to work with. When I met her, it was like reconnecting with an old friend. We had an instant rapport and shooting with her was a blast. Not only is she beautiful and easy to work with, but she’s smart as a whip as well and willing to work hard to get the job done.

I hope to photograph her again sometime soon. If you need a model, let me know and I will put her in touch with you. Check out some of her pictures:

The Art of Portraiture

September 3rd, 2007

Amy Lyn - ModelWhat are portraits and why are they important? Is a portrait simply a headshot or is there more to it? Is it the same as a documentary photograph of someone or does that not capture something? What’s the difference between a pretty picture and something more substantial – an intimate portrait of someone, showing character and beauty, the essence of a person, a deep view into who they are?

Amy Lyn - ModelWe will talk about these issues and others in my upcoming class on portraits and will get hands-on experience making portraits with a professional model in my studio, using my lighting equipment. This includes two Alienbees B800 lamps, backgrounds and other equipment. (Be sure to watch for my upcoming “Build Your Own Home Studio” class as well.)

Tiffany - ModelThe date is not set at this time but it will be a weekend day toward the middle of September and will be two or three hours in length, so everyone has the opportunity to use the lights and work with a model. Email me to get updates to this, or else subscribe to my RSS feed.
